HANNIBAL - Weather permitting, as early as February 18, a bridge replacement and interchange improvement project, located at the Routes E/Y and Interstate 70 interchange, in Jonesburg in Montgomery County, is scheduled to begin.
This improvement project will replace the existing bridge over I-70, update the interchange layout to increase capacity and mobility, and make accommodations for the I-70 expansion project. Major improvements to the interchange will include:
- New Bridge: A wider bridge will be constructed in the existing location featuring 12-foot driving lanes
and 10-foot shoulders. - Interchange Improvements: Increased bridge clearance and span widths to accommodate the Improve I-70 template with the addition of a third lane.
On February 18, the Routes E/Y interchange bridge over I-70 will close to traffic for the duration of the project. At this time, the following traffic impacts will include:
- CLOSED: The existing Routes E/Y bridge closure, between the I-70 (eastbound and westbound) interchange ramps. There will be no north-south access across the interstate at this location
- OPEN: All interchange ramps will remain open.
- DETOUR: A signed detour will be in place to reroute motorists to reach their destinations
- Route E (eastbound/westbound): Use the Northwest Service Road to the Route F interchange at High Hill (west) or the Routes A/B interchange, near Pendleton (east).
- Route Y (eastbound): Take Veteran’s Memorial Parkway to the Route A/B interchange
- Route Y (westbound): Travel west on Route Y to Route Y Spur/Fleahman Road, crossing to the north side of I-70, then turn left onto the Northwest Service Road to reach the Route F Interchange.
Weather permitting, I-70 and local traffic will be temporarily rerouted for up to a 24-hour period beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, February 23, to facilitate the bridge removal. This work is weather-dependent and schedule changes may occur. During this stage, the below additional traffic impacts will be in place:
- Eastbound and westbound I-70 will be reduced to one lane with an 11-foot width restriction in place, and all traffic will be diverted up and over the interchange ramps, then back to I-70.
- No turning movements will be allowed at the interchange ramp terminals, thereby eliminating access to the outer service roads and Routes E/Y.
- Delays on I-70 are expected during the temporary closures. To alleviate congestion, motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
- Additionally, a temporary closure of Routes E/Y will be in place:
- Route E will close between the interchange ramps and Northwest Service Road
- Route Y will close just south of the eastbound I-70 ramp terminal
- To access I-70, local traffic will utilize the signed detours to the neighboring interchanges at Route F located at Exit 179 at High Hill or Routes A/B at Exit 188, near Pendleton.
- Route E (eastbound/westbound) - utilizing Northwest Service Road to Route F interchange at High Hill (west) or Routes A/B interchange, near Pendleton (east)
- Route Y (eastbound) - take Veteran’s Memorial Parkway to the Route A/B interchange
- Route Y (westbound) - travel west on Route Y to Route Y Spur/Fleahman Road, crossing to the north side of I-70, then turn left onto the Northwest Service Road to reach the Route F Interchange
Once the bridge removal is complete, I-70 traffic will return to its normal configuration, and Routes E and Y will regain access to all interchange ramps. However, the bridge will remain closed until construction is complete, and detours will stay in place through Summer 2026.
Signs and message boards will be in place to alert motorists, as schedule changes occur. MoDOT will alert the public about the project through signs, news releases and social media. As the project moves forward, additional information will be available on the project website at https://www.modot.org/projects/route-e-and-route-y-bridge-replacement-over-interstate-70-montgomery-county
